1 Spiritual Covering? on Tue Jan 16, 2018 7:08 am

In the world we live in; we all are accountable to God, in that accountability there is submission to God ordained authorities set within the confines of the body of Christ. In the Old Testament a mantle represent the authority of the prophet who wore it, the high priest wore the garments which identified him with the role which he was called to exercise. The crown represents the office and authority of his kingship. Jesus is the Messiah or the Anointing and he has anointed different children in his kingdom for different roles. Not all are called to the administration of pastoring and are not anointed for that position. It is a different aspect of the same anointing which we all possess as Christians. I understand that no matter how strong one’s faith is and how close they maybe to God they cannot afford to isolate or insulate themselves from the body of Christ believing they have no need of others or their prayers, fellowship, and counsel.

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. (Ephesians 4:7)

The function or office every Christian is dependent upon the gift which they possess and will be the most useful operating that gift to make the body of Christ more functional. The Lord put an anointing upon certain individuals for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry. To anoint; someone or something is to apply it and smear or rub it in for a purpose. The Chief Shepherd Jesus is illustrated in Psalm 23 “He anoints my head with oil my cup runs over” as with sheep that anointing protected them from pestilences. It is the same today when God anoints a spiritual leader to watch over his flock as an under shepherd. So in that sense that one becomes a covering, someone who loves, cares, and watches over God’s flock.

(11) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
(12) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
(13) Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
(14) That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
(15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
(16) From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. Ephesians 4:11-16

No one is anointed all by themselves for only themselves we all share in the same anointing or covering but in different gifts, calls, and roles within the same body. Everyone is called to be a witness, but not everyone is called to be a pulpit minister or a pastor. The bible is clear concerning his ordained authorities and our response to those genuinely called.

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. (Hebrews 13:17)

God is a God of order and a firm foundation; he understands human nature more than we do. When I submit myself to mentorship of someone who has traveled this gospel road more than I have making accountable and provable I am coming under their oversight or their covering. Their prayers and counsel are seasoned in the experience and wisdom of their years in Christ. That doesn’t take anything away from me or the anointing and authority I have in Christ to the contrary it adds to me. Spiritual leaders are a spiritual covering in the sense they’re anointed to that calling and we only benefit when we submit to this principle. Spiritual leaders are people who have been called to cover God’s flock with certain attributes which reflect Christ in the content and character of biblical leadership and have to face God for how they utilized their positions.

(1) The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
(2) Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
(3) Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
(4) And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
(5) Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
(6) Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 1 Peter 5:1-6

There are many terms we use in Christendom that are not used in the bible yet we accept them without blinking an eye. The term “spiritual covering” may not be mention specifically; but if one does a thorough study of the scriptures they will find it is a biblical one. Remember too; every time a Christian prays, exhorts, counsels, another Christian they have just become a spiritual covering! Why? Because; the anointing; is a spiritual thing given to us to love our neighbor and to do unto others as we would have them do unto us. We are all; under the “spiritual covering” of Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. Also; there are many principles, precepts, and protocols to be found within the complete counsel of God’s wonderful and amazing word. Selah
