Numbers 21:1-3 King James Version (KJV)
21 And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.
2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.
3 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.

21 The king of Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt in the South, heard that Israel was coming on the road to Atharim. Then he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoners. 2 So Israel made a vow to the LORD, and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.” 3 And the LORD listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of that place was called Hormah.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

1 The Israelites were taken captive by a Cannanite king, these would be the people the were to later drive out, at this point in time Israel was just a people not a military and they didn’t even yet have their own land, so they could have taken with much of a struggle except they had the Lord on their side so this king made a big mistake.

2 This was a good thing for them to vow because its what God wanted them to do but generations later they choose to leave among the Cannanites instead of driving them away or destroying their land as God commanded.

3 This generation did what the next should have done once they went into the land. If the next generation was willing to drive them out then they would have conquered the land because they have all they need in God. We today have all need to conquer in God because Christ won that battle on the cross.
